Benedict Louis DeFonzo, 78, of Island Heights & Fort Myers passed away peacefully on Friday, October 7, 2016.
Ben was born to Angelina and Benedetto DeFonzo in Jersey Shore, PA where he lived until moving to Ocean County in 1964 and worked as Co-Director of Athletics at Southern Regional High School until his retirement in 1999. He was Ocean County Athletic Director of the Year in 1997-1998 and inducted into the Southern Regional Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. Benedict Louis DeFonzo, 78, of Island Heights & Fort Myers passed away peacefully on Friday, October 7, 2016.
Ben was born to Angelina and Benedetto DeFonzo in Jersey Shore, PA where he lived until moving to Ocean County in 1964 and worked as Co-Director of Athletics at Southern Regional High School until his retirement in 1999. He was Ocean County Athletic Director of the Year in 1997-1998 and inducted into the Southern Regional Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. He was a former chairman of the Island Heights planning board, a board member on the Cinnamon Cove Master Board, and an Island Heights Yacht Club member.
He was a loving husband to Elena and proud father of his 2 sons, David and Andrew and his wife, Amy. He was a grandfather to 6 wonderful grandchildren Eliza, Emma, Ben, Ella, Maggie and Drew. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Joseph and Anthony. He is survived by siblings Frank DeFonzo, Liz Fowler and Caroline Bamonte and many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
Ben loved spending time with his family, playing tennis, enjoying boating & fishing and was an avid Penn State Football fan.
Visitation will be at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River on Thursday, October 13 from 4-8 pm. Funeral Services will be held at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church, 103 Central Ave., Island Heights on Friday, October 14 at 10:00 am.
